The week of my 33rd birthday, a dear friend sat on my bed – looked me dead in the eye and said “Let’s cut the b.s Blue. This year…I want you to have pure fulfillment; in EVERY aspect of your life. No excuses”

Then she proceeded to give me a (much needed) pep talk about how the days of half-assed relationships, friendships, and overall settling had come to an end.

This stern but loving reality check culminated with her saying:

“These days n*ggas want credit just for showing up. But showing up isn’t enough. Letting people take up space in your life is NOT enough. What are they contributing? Not just financially but spiritually, emotionally, intellectually. Are you growing from being around these people? Or are they only growing from being around you?

Being a nice person or a good person isn’t enough either. Cause not all nice people have integrity. ONLY fuck with folks who have integrity. Folks who are actually making you better too instead of it always being the other way around”

Needless to say I just kinda sat there dumbstruck.

Given that I’m usually the one giving these impassioned speeches – it felt surprisingly good to be on the receiving end for once. And I can honestly say, whatever magic she sprinkled on me that day – stuck.

Since then, any half-assed situation that I previously invested time in… has promptly disappeared from my life; leaving room for nothing but a level of peace I’d forgotten I was capable of.

At some point this weekend, as I sipped on some white wine, marveling at how happy and shellshocked I’ve been lately (cause let’s face it, drastic change is jarring no matter how cathartic)… I stumbled across a leaked version of Beyonce’s new single ‘Grown Woman’.

My immediate reaction: “OMG! Lemme find out Beyonce’s been reading my journal”

Yes – I’m aware how painfully cliche it is to think a pop star is singing about your life; especially someone as super pop, and mega A-List as Queen Bey. My inner hipster wishes I could roll my eyes at this track and pontificate about some exclusive underground emo rock band instead… just to show ya’ll how cool and exclusive I am.

But that would be a bold face lie.

Truth is…. from the defiant, uber confident ‘Bitch I’m in my 30s!’ lyrics, to the fast paced tribal beat (reminiscent of my afro-latin/caribbean roots) EVERYTHING about this joint gives me life! I even giggled and did a fancy two step in my kitchen the 8 millionth time I listened to it; complete with some African dance moves I learned in Harlem and an awkward rendition of the “butterfly” that I pulled out my ’90s vault.

And in that moment – I finally got glimpse of the “pure fulfillment” my lovely friend wished upon me last month. And I’m just getting started.

Good looking out Mrs. Carter.

I gotta say… listening to yet another catchy Kelly Rowland sex song is the last things I want to do with my time. I love Ms. Rowland but hearing her repeatedly release bodyroll singles – only to come out with lackluster albums that no one buys – is a d*cksoft.

All those false starts have left me viewing her as “the girl who cried wolf” (in hot pants).

So while the rest of ya’ll have been singing about “Kisses Down Low”, “Motivation” and rubbin “I.C.E” all over yourselves… I’ve been rolling my eyes and yawning; wondering what color nail polish Beyonce is wearing that day.

Somebody must’ve notified Kelz that she was coming off as a one trick pony because today she finally (FINALLY) released a song so real, even I had to listen.

Via Billboard:

At the center of the project is “Dirty Laundry,” a collaboration with The-Dream that Rowland premiered today (Wednesday, May 15) – the candid track finds Rowland laying herself bare with frank and often poignant commentary that begins during a rough period shortly after the release of her solo debut “Simply Deep” in 2002.

The song unfolds in chapters, with Rowland confronting her resentment over Beyoncé’s post-Destiny’s Child success in the first verse. “When my sister was on stage / killing it like a mother fucker / I was in a rage / feeling it like a motherfucker,” she sings, later adding, “Post-’Survivor,’ she on fire / Who wanna hear my bullshit?”

My favorite motto of 2013 has been “Own your sh*t”. No matter how messy, jacked up, or illogical your feelings/actions may be…. if you suck it up and own it – you’ll at least have my respect.

Brava Kelly.

You just won back all those cool points I thought you’d misplaced.

Listen to the track below.

I find it fascinating, that in a country where race has been a hot button topic since it’s inception – most of us still don’t even know what it is.

For example, it tends to piss people off when I point out that Latino is not a race; but instead an ethnicity that houses many races. And while they’re in their feelings, I also tend to throw in that African isn’t a race either. *insert gasp*.

Understandably, this makes for heated dinner party conversations. Which is to be expected, considering the dis-ease that many of us harbor around race and identity politics in general.

Soooo….in my never ending bid to make it into heaven – I’ve created the breakdown below; which will (hopefully) demystify all this in plain English.

Race vs. Ethnicity vs. Nationality

Race:
relates to a person’s appearance – most notably, the color of their skin. It is determined biologically, with genetic traits such as skin color, eye color, hair color, bone/jaw structure etc. Race is BIOLOGICAL/PHYSICAL in nature.

The THREE Races: Negroid, Caucasoid, and Mongoloid (yup..that’s it folks!)

Ethnicity:
belonging to a social group that has a common nationality, culture, ancestry, language and beliefs. Because it is based in cultural differences, ethnicity is CULTURAL in nature.

How is ethnicity different from race?: Race is a socially constructed category that draws on observations of physical differences among different groups of individuals.

Ethnic groups are fluid in composition and can include various racial categories. For example, Jewish people are an ethnic group that includes people anywhere from Eastern European to African ancestry. Jewish is not a race, it’s an ethnicity.

Examples of ethnicity: African, African American, Caribbean, Greek, Hawaiian, Latino, West Indian etc.

Nationality:

Nationality refers to an individual’s relationship with their state of origin, meaning that this relationship is POLITICAL in nature.

Sometimes, nationality and ethnicity are linked but this may not always be the case. America’s melting pot is the best example of this. We are one nationality that houses hundreds of ethnicities.

Due to the fact that nationality is political it can be changed at any time.

For example: Back in the day, I used to be in constant fear of being deported. But now – several paychecks and a good lawyer later – I get to hit the dougie on the 4th of July like the rest of ya’ll and vote during elections. All this, simply because my nationality got changed to “American” at the age of 26.

Can you tell I’m still a little bit salty? But I digress….

Common mis-use of race vs ethnicity: Sometimes being politically correct breeds inaccuracies. No case illustrates this point better than the term “African American”. In the early 60′s the term Negro was socially acceptable, and by the end of the 70′s we had started using black. Which is fine (and accurate).

But then, someone got the bright idea to start calling us African American; a very specific title that – unintentionally – excludes black people in this country who have different cultural identities. And just like that *poof* a whole race was replaced with just one ethnicity.

As a black woman who lives in this country but who was born, raised, and identify as a culture other than “African American” – I’ve personally had to deal with the divisiveness that occurs from using these terms interchangeably. A lot of people think that by not claiming an African American ethnicity, that I am somehow discrediting my black race.

And I can’t even fault them. They were never taught the difference. Many don’t even know there is one.

In A Nutshell

Race: people who are believed to belong to the same genetic stock
Ethnicity: people who come from the same culture and/or share the same language, beliefs, traditions etc.
Nationality: Where’s your passport from? What nation do you pay rent & taxes in?

What If I Think This Is All Bullsh*t?

There are some who argue race is a flawed manmade construct, and they have a point.

Race presumes shared biological or genetic traits. However, the scientific basis of racial distinctions can be weak. And thanks to a little thing called “evolution”, studies show many changes in racial identity that are exceedingly problematic to verify.

So if you want to be uber progressive and declare “I’m part of the HUMAN race!” – that’s lovely; admirable even. But if you – in any way – subscribe to to myth of race, it make sense to understand what you’re talking about.

Dumb Questions

I’m no expert – but when I discuss this topic, I often see the unasked questions written all over people’s faces. Things they want to clarify – but don’t – because they assume they should already know the answers.

No worries. This section is specifically for you.

Hold up Blue – African’s not a race?!: Nope. It is definitely an ethnicity. I’ve met way too many Caucasoid (White) Africans who I would be doing a disservice, if I claimed otherwise. And since Africa is a continent (not a country!) – it’s automatically out of the running for the nationality distinction as well.

Saying African is your race, would be no less inaccurate than saying North American is a race. Continents are not races. I know it sounds incredibly odd to hear it phrased this way, but I’m hoping these analogies help this stuff sink in.

What’s the difference between Latino & Hispanic?

It has often been said that “Hispanic” refers to people from Spain, Portugual or Iberian nations that speak Spanish. While “Latino” refers to people from the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic), South America (Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, etc.) and Central America (Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, etc.) Basically all of Latin America

But according to the 2010 Census:

“The terms “Hispanic” or “Latino” refer to persons who trace their origin or descent to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spanish speaking Central and South America countries, and other Spanish cultures.

This particular definition uses Hispanic & Latino interchangeably, while excluding the Portuguese, Brazilians, or anyone else from countries that speaks Portuguese.

So basically, the whole “Latino vs Hispanic” question is such a loaded one though, it deserves it’s own conversation.

If Latino isn’t a race, than why is it often called the fastest growing race in America?:
Because America likes to redefine sh*t for political reasons. And it makes a great talking point during debates about immigration rights.

One of the reasons the number of Latin Americans appears so huge is because people of all races can be Latino. Therefore, it’s kind of skewed to look at Latinos versus Blacks, when in reality, many Latinos are black! You’re dipping twice into the same pot.

Is there ever a time when race & ethnicity can be used interchangeably: Sure. The mongoloid (Asian) race refers to populations that share certain physical traits common in East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Americas and the Arctic.

Therefore if you are of the Asian race and have an Asian cultural identity – then lucky you! You can skip all this rigamarole, and keep it moving. But many of us don’t have such a homogenous identity.

Well what race are Native Americans then?!

Native Americans (i.e., folks we used to refer to as Indians in less politically correct times) are part of the Mongoloid race. In fact because of this that is why many Latinos with Native American lineage seem to have what we call “Asian features”.

Anecdotally – I once knew a boy named Philipe growing up. And for the longest time I assumed he was Mexican. Imagine my surprise when one day I found out he was actually Philippino. I have often heard others make the same observations about misidentifying certain Latinos as Asian (and vice versa). The truth is – many Latin cultures have Native American lineage, which means they have traces of them Mongoloid race in their gene pools.

Ok. So I think that covers the basics.

I did my best to simplify this in the best way I could – without insulting anyone’s intelligence or offending people’s sensibilities. But if you’ve somehow read this whole post, and are still experiencing a bit of brain freeze, I get it.

The whole race/ethnicity thing can be a bit confusing, so if this sparks some healthy dialogue…then yay! I’m all for that. This conversation needs to happen. And truth be told, if one.more.person rolls up to me and says “OMG Blue! I didn’t know you were Cuban. I thought you were black!” – I may just lose my cool and start throwing fried plantains at them.

Seriously.

A few days ago, I found myself gorging on Google, looking up fun facts and corny pick-up lines (which I do all the time, because I’m random). My noble search led me to gems such as – “Hey baby! I’m Burger King and you’re McDonalds. I’ll have it my way and you’ll be lovin’ it”

Get it – my way…luvin it! Ha!

No?

Ok.

*insert awkward pause*

So anyways…

In the midst of all this, somehow I stumbled across the bio of a dope lady named Radclyffe Hall (born Marguerite Radclyffe-Hall 1880 – 1943). She was an English poet and author, best known for the lesbian classic: The Well of Loneliness.

In addition to her writing, she’s also known for being one of the first openly gay women to wear men’s clothing during a time when that practice didn’t even have a name. It goes without saying that Radclyffe was ahead of her time. And after reading excerpts from her novel – I decided to take a deeper look into the history of Androgynous style.

The first thing I learned was that “women in menswear” jumped to the height of its popularity in the 1940s – when women had to dress for survival.

This was a time when many of our granddads and dads were being sent off to fight in the war, while leaving their women and children at home. As a result, the mothers and daughters left behind started taking on more masculine roles – which required them to adjust the way they dressed.

Learning so much about the evolution if female androgyny was an eye-opener and caused me to examine my own relationship with menswear.

One of my friends teasingly calls me a Dandy because on any given day, you’ll probably catch me wearing a blazer and tie. While I notice the looks I get from people – the truth is, I’m passionate about refined clothing and make no attempt to hide that fact. I love the cleanliness of a crisp oxford shirt paired with an Avant-Garde bowtie and slightly worn leather brogues. And when I go to a newsstand or bookstore, I always make a beeline towards the latest issue of GQ.

Let’s be clear: even though my external presentation celebrates the male aesthetic – energetically, I feel unconditionally like a woman; a personal truth which shatters the myth that ALL women who dress masculine want to “be men”.

Reading about Radclyyfe made me realize that I’m in good company. Through history, there has been a long line of us who embrace our womanhood in spite of having on the best wingtips in the room.

Below is a quick photo gallery of Radclyyfe and some other dapper kindred spirits.

One day while I was living in France, I remember walking out of my room to go to the bathroom. I looked over on the couch and saw this young french tenderoni, who looked like he fell out of a Kanye West video. A little stunned by the random guy on my couch, I looked at him and said, “Bonjour.” He smiled back with a Cheshire grin and responds, “Sup, I’m Karo”.

Later I found out that he was the friend of one of my teammates and also one of the hottest Artist/DJ’s in France. He invited me and a few of my teammates to hang with him in the VIP of an upcoming party that he’d be DJ’n at.

I took him up on the offer and upon arrival found myself rocking out to French hip-hop. I had no clue what they were saying; but the urge to tap my foot and throw my hands up in the air saying “EY-YO” over-powered me.

When I look back at that day, its hard to believe that one of my coolest music discoveries happened right in the middle of my living room!

Fun fact:

“France is the world’s second-largest hip-hop market and the fifth largest global music market, with 7 percent of the world’s music sales…” (Source)

I was even more excited a few days ago when I found out that Karo was being featured in a new video by Gyptian. I love music and I love supporting my friends, especially when they’re passionate about their craft.

I’m proud of this kid, so check out my boy Senor Karo in the video below.

Where do I begin?

In 2012 I was awarded the opportunity of a lifetime; I’d signed a contract to play semi-pro basketball overseas, and was excited to start my new life – surrounded by exotic people and experiences. If all had gone well – right now I’d be swathed in a Hermès scarf, and sipping on a latte (while posting pictures of the Champs-Élysées on my Instagram).

But instead, I’m here – in a crowded coffee shop in Northwest DC, writing this blog post on an old laptop that’s seen better days. I tend to keep a low profile; so most who know me are probably wondering, “What happened? Why is Katrina back already?” And I can understand their confusion; to some extent I’m still processing everything that’s happened over the past year myself. But before I get into all of that – let me take you back a little…

Growing up in DC…

I was a pretty ok athlete. Won a few awards, went to a decent college and managed to get a good education while dodging the common slip-ups that many of today’s youth stumble into. After college, I took a few years away from basketball to experience what life would be like living as a “normal” human-being. So, I packed a bag and moved to New York.

Moving to the Big Apple was like riding a motorcycle with no helmet; I was clear that it would be an awesome joy-ride, but also aware I’d probably be reckless in the process. Being from DC, I’d heard all of the stories about NYC – shopping on 5th Avenue, parties all night long, Reggaeton music playing in the local bodegas; but nothing compared to actually living here. I learned a lot from the experience. It taught me some essential life lessons about choosing (and not choosing) healthy relationships. And I even made a few good friends.

On a typical day, I worked at the Sports Club in White Plains, while constantly overhearing people murmur: “Who’s the tall black chick with the blazer and tie?”

I was a walking spectacle entrenched in a sea of well-off, upper-class folks whose daily stresses boiled down to: “Damn, I just got a flat tire on the Ferrari! I hope I have a spare one in the Lambo.”

Ok so maybe I’m exaggerating a bit here. But the gist is – there was a huge perception gap between their reality and mine. I was a fish out of water. And while most young 20-somethings would’ve seen this as an obstacle, I saw it as an opportunity and basically brown nosed with as many yuppies as I possibly could.

That worked for a while. But after a year, I’d seen all I needed to see and headed back to DC to regroup. While working at a local bar I started brainstorming on what other ventures I could take on. I’ve always been deeply rooted in fitness so much of my soul searching happened late night at the gym. During one of those workouts, I noticed I was still in pretty good shape, and decided to go out on a limb and try this basketball thing again. I mean, why not? I’d been playing since I was 8 and my six-pack was still in tact. It seemed like a no brainer.

After an exhausting process (I’ll spare you the details), I was introduced to an agent from Germany who was willing to take me on as a client. But there was just one catch – since I had taken two years away from the sport, she was concerned that many teams would be hesitant to pick me up no matter what my resume looked like. To offset this concern, I was invited to a basketball camp in Bonn Germany, where several hundred players would be competing in front of top coaches for contracts.

At that moment – I felt like I was starting my entire career over from scratch. Nevertheless, this would be my one and only opportunity to get back on the court and prove myself. Everything sounded great, except for the fact that the total trip would cost me about $1500 and I was broke. Undeterred, I picked up a few more shifts, had a few friends pitch in and bought my first (of many) plane tickets to Europe.

The flight to Bonn, Germany was amazing!

Sitting in business class with a glass of bubbly in my hand all that was going through my mind was, “If this is what playing overseas is like…Hell, IM ALL IN!!!”

I arrived in Bonn and met up with a few other girls who were attending the camp while in the airport. We all took a shuttle over to the gym and conversed briefly in the car about our experiences and what we were looking to get out of it. Everyone had on sneakers and sweat pants with gym bags across their shoulders. At first I couldn’t figure out why they were all looking at me strange – then it clicked; I was wearing a blazer with a shirt and tie and my version of a gym bag was my Yves Saint Laurent duffle.

That awkward moment when you realize that you over-dressed – yet again.

I should’ve taken that as a sign of what was to come.

To be continued……

Justin Timberlake has just released the video for ‘Mirrors’; a love song inspired by his wife Jessica Biel (who is his mirror) – with a video that pays homage to the longterm romance of his grandparents William and Sadie.

Via Slate:

As an imaginative depiction of William and Sadie’s decades-long relationship, “Mirrors” features three separate couples in different stages of love—the whirlwind courtship, the difficulties of marriage, and the later years of togetherness. In fact, Timberlake is nowhere to be seen until the final two minutes, when he catches a falling ring from the woman playing his grandmother and performs a solo dance in a funhouse hall of mirrors.

When I previewed his album a couple days ago – this was the first song that stuck out in my mind. I’m not surprised he chose to make it his next single.

Dephyne is Annapolis, Maryland-born and Alabama-bred. Her music brings a nice mix of city style and down south swag.

1. Are you and your character anything alike? Why or why not?

Yes we are similar as far as pride and ego. I used to feel like my girl should be just as attractive as I am. I’m doing better with that. It’s not all about looks, but I think that maturuity comes with age. Back in my teens I was really on that tip but feelings and personality are more important than the external. It’s something I had to learn and it took some deep dives, but I’m here now.

We are different in a lot of ways. My character DJ Got Damn is a scorpio and I’m a virgo, so we handle things a bit differently so it’s definitely a challenge because in some of the scenes I have to find a little bit more anger and she’s a little more hot headed than I usually am.

2. What is your favorite thing about working on Skye’s The Limit?

There is a lot of team work and I’ve always been an athlete so I love being on a team and this is definitely a great team to be apart of so that’s the best thing.

3. What would you like the audience to know about Gina DJ Got Damn this season?

I’m not a complete asshole, I’m really not. All you see from me is complete asshole-ery.

As the second season comes along you get to see that I have a heart. I’m not just as much of an asshole. Everything I do has meaning behind it. There is something deeper than what it looks on the outside , but I do love the ladies.

4. How does being a rapper in real life affect your character?

Sometimes I have to separate them and remember Dephyne and DJ Got Damn are two different people. They are parallel, its almost the same kind of life. From the ladies, and the different scenes to performing and coming from shows. The different love you get from the promoters and the audience is very similar and it’s definitely relatable.

1. Are you and your character anything alike? Why or why not?
Yes! She has a super sassy personality and we are both cute. But in my own relationship I would not be okay with some of the things that Maya accepts and even allows in some ways with her realationship with Jay

2. Favorite thing about working on Skye’s The Limit.
Watching Blue’s dream become a reality. The family we have made with cast members, and our bond with the cast and production team.

3. What would you like the audience to know about Maya this season?
Maya is not a hoe. Maya is a very classy character that happens to have a lot fun. She will be the ultimate authority on fat girls. Everybody is going to want to be this fat girl.

-By Nia Kiara Cole (Production Team)

On a warm fall evening in mid August, we approached a small sage house in NW DC. Leaning up against the white railing, we knocked loudly on the door. As the door opened I was greeted warmly with a large smile and a hug as Blue welcomed me into her home. Ushering us inside, I was overwhelmed by the energy and excitement in the room as I worked my way through the collection of people that filled the every inch of the place.

Blue brought us into the back room and as I looked over a confidentiality agreement, she began spewing out the story of Skye’s The Limit. The fervor in her voice was unmatched, the passion in her eyes was infectious, and it was in that moment that I knew that here was where I was supposed to be.

Working for bluecentric productions on Skye’s The Limit has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever been apart of.

Without further adieu, may we present …

Being a writer tends to make one verbose (I’m no exception). So perhaps that’s why I’ve always been kind of tickled by six word stories – also known as six word memoirs; a practice made popular by Earnest Hemingway.

For those who don’t know – the premise is pretty simple: You have to say as much as you can, in just six words; a morsel of storytelling that makes Twitter’s 140 character limit seem longwinded by comparison.

Tonight, I found myself grappling with a bout of insomnia, and before I knew what was going on, I went into a trance and wrote a ton of these tidbits. 33 of them to be exact. Given that my 33rd birthday is only a few months away, that number has become very significant for me.

I’d planned to just email these to myself and go to bed. But here it is, 3:33a.m and something is telling me to share these. So I will. Please feel free to write (and share) six word stories of your own.

33 Stories

#1. an unexpected muse – from the past

#2. i dreamt us so clearly, once.

#3. what we became, I didn’t choose.

#4. Endings. Beginnings. Is there a difference?

#5. Sometimes, what almost was – haunts me.

#6. Get together. Fall apart. Start over.

#7. new me, new you. now what?

#8. the most beautiful words, never spoken

#9. our love is without a home

10. deep down, i know whats real

11. I’m slowly giving up on us.

12. and yet, here we are. still.

13. six words aren’t enough for this…

14. admit it, this scares you too.

15. maybe i made it all up

16. maybe our love would destroy us

17. indecision and caution chase away bliss

18. untapped potential – is just fantasy

19. the reality is, we never were.

20. the truth is, we should be.

21. two cowards in love. how karmic.

22. you move first, and i’ll follow

23. i wish it were that simple.

24. our grandkids will find this funny

25. its not so funny now, though

26. sometimes fear is easier than love

27. who said easy was good tho?

28. what we don’t say speaks volumes

29. your eyes, tell their own story

30. im worried my courage, scares you

31. i’m so damn happy you exist

32. can’t even pretend i don’t care

33. at 11:11 i wish for us.

Each line is a story and yet all of them together tell one as well.

Honestly didn’t do that on purpose <---Ooop there goes another six.

More bite sized storytelling in the gallery below; including one from the uber amazing Shonda Rhimes.

Magic happens when you least expect it.

And tonight…I didn’t even see it coming.

My amazingly talented friends Asha and Patience (who make up the musical duo BOOMscat) came over to work on the theme song for Skye’s the Limit and on a whim decided to play their rendition of ‘Prototype’.

What resulted was so organically perfect, I ran to turn on my handy audio equipment – and an hour later, (to all of our amazement) – they’d recorded a mixtape. I mean like a whole…damn..piece of musical loveliness; complete with two bonus tracks.

By the second song I couldn’t help noting that the tracks tell a story.

• First you meet someone breathtakingly special and the situation is so pregnant with possibility you find yourself steeped in hope and questions (Prototype).
• Then you get nervous and try to stay cool…but they’ve left an imprint that haunts you (Thinking About You)
• Finally you concede in the 3rd track called “The Answer“; a brilliant mashup of “Is This Love”, “Simply Beautiful” and “For Real”.

The very last bonus song, is you basking in acceptance – and relief.

Yes! This is real….and it’s all yours.

If you’re in the mood to be moved…then sit back and enjoy. We even did a playful interview between the ladies and I at the end.

I have a confession to make – Kendrick Llama‘s verse on “Fuqqin Problems” makes me giddy. Like, I know it’s messy and maybe even misogynistic…but…I swear fa’ Gawd every time I hear him say “Girl, I know you want this DIH!” – I have to control the urge to squeal in amusement.

And I guess that’s kind of the beauty of Kendrick. He can make even the most ratchet of ratchetness palatable.

His new video for “Backstreet Freestyle” proves this point even further. Cause trust and believe that if anyone else on earth ever said “Martin had a dream!”…only to declare seconds later “Got damn I got b*tches!” – I’d surely go on a womanist tirade.

But alas…Mr. Poetic Justice is my kryptonite. Cause I’m not even halfway mad. *hangs head in quasi-shame*

P.S – the big bellied pimp halfway through the video, is apparently his father o_O

Unapologetic Foolywang…with a SICK ass beat

It’s about 1:20am on Monday.

I’m in the guest room at my family’s house (visiting for the holidays) and have just woken up from what may be the best wet dream of my adult life. Times like this, life feels perfect. And the soft patter of rain outside my window…is just begging me to fall back asleep.

But instead, I’m squinting at my computer screen in the dark – hoping my next door neighbor’s crappy wi-fi connection holds up until I’m done writing this blog post.

What could have possibly happened at this time of night to have me soooo pressed to get on the interweb (and forego finishing that bomb ass dream)?

Simply put – Amanda ’330′ Carter.

At this point I could easily wax poetic about what a dope MC she is, her impeccable swag, or the fact that she is one of the many sexy new cast members of our upcoming web-series ‘Skye’s The Limit’. Instead I think I’ll just let her work speak for itself. Because it seems that as I was tucking myself into bed this evening – like a thief in the night she dropped her new video for ‘Faded’; a black and white clip directed by my homegirl B Steady (who is also hella amazing in her own right).

So yeah — that’s why I’m up right now. That’s what has me so pressed.

And now that I’ve done my civic duty to share with my readers a taste of the awesome type folks who I habitually surround myself with, I’m finna go slip back into bed and uh…

Actually, you know what… let me stop there before I type something I’ll regret in the morning.

Enjoy lovelies!

Welp – all you thirsty Bey fans have finally gotten your wish!

Yesterday it was announced that in addition to performing at the Super Bowl Half Time show, Mrs. Carter is officially getting her pretty mug plastered on a can of Pepsi (although I’d be remiss not to point out that fashion icon/stunt-queen Karl Lagerfeld already pulled off something similar a while back).

Bey’s 10-year-old partnership has now gone super global – with limited edition Pepsi cans being just the tip of the iceberg.

According to The New York Times:

It’s a “hybrid project with Beyoncé that will include standard advertising like commercials as well as a multimillion-dollar fund to support the singer’s chosen creative projects.”

According to the press release, the new collabo includes:

•Establishing the Creative Development Fund, a resource devoted to the co-creation of innovative and relevant consumer content.
•Collaboration on design – in addition to having her image on a can or bottle, she is working with us on the design of all materials related to the partnership
•Beyoncé starring in a new “Live for Now” global TV commercial, currently planned for release in early 2013
•Beyoncé will be appearing in print and out of home advertisements for Pepsi. She will also be visible in-store and on-premise through materials such as shelf promotions, in-store displays and in-store advertising.

Um…ok.

So basically – she’s plotting world domination (yet again). Gotcha!
